This is the real Martin Z. Mollusk.

nTodaynin Ocean City, New Jersey, people are gathering to see if a hermitncrab named Martin Z. Mollusk can see his shadow.

n
nThentime? 11:00 in the morning.
n

n

nThenplace? The beach adjacent to the Ocean City Music Pier.

n

n

n

nThenlocal high school’s band will play “Pomp and Circumstance” tongive the feeling of gravitas for the event.

n

n

n

n

n

n

n

This is some guy dressed up as Martin Z.
Mollusk.

nThenna procession of pretend “celebrities” will parade into the areansurrounding the “Circle of Truth,” and there will be a song orntwo and a few pretty speeches.

n

n

n

nThen—thenmoment of truth—the hermit crab will emerge from hiding and eithernsee, or not see, his shadow! If he sees his shadow, hooray! –nsummer comes to Ocean City a week early! If he doesn’t – nonworries, summer will still come…just right on time.

n

n

n

nOkay, nyes, this is a complete rip-off of Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania’s,nGroundhog Day. But it brings people into town on Thursday before thenbig Spring Block Party on the weekend. For several days there will ben350 vendors in the streets, live entertainment, pony rides, fun fornthe tens of thousands of people who come to town!

n

n

n

nBynthe way, I read that, so far, Martin Z. Mollusk has ALWAYS seen hisnshadow!

n

n

n

nJustna minute, here!

n

n

n

nIfnMartin is a hermit crab, why is he “Martin Z. (the) Mollusk”?nDon’t you know, hermit crabs are crustaceans, like other crabs andnshrimp and lobster?

n

n

n

nWhat’snthe difference between mollusks and crustaceans?

n

n

n

n

^ CRUSTACEANS ^

n

n

n

n

n

nHere’snone way they are alike:

n

n

n

n

nNeithernmollusks nor crustaceans have an internal skeleton (bones).

n

nBothnof them have external skeletons – called exoskeletons. (Well, MOSTnmollusks and all crustaceans have exoskeletons. An octopus and a slugnare examples of mollusks without skeletons of any sort.) We generallyncall these exoskeletons shells.

n

n

n

n

nButnthey are really different in other ways:

n

n

n

n

n

n

This is a mollusk.

n

n

nCrustaceansnare more closely related to insects and spiders than mollusks are.nLike insects and spiders, crustaceans have segmented bodies andnpaired, jointed legs. They also have two pairs of antennae.

n

nMollusks, non the other hand, have soft, unsegmented bodies and no legs ornantennae. (Don’t confuse the two soft sensory tentacles on top of ansnail’s head with antennae—they’re very different.)

n

n

n

n

n

n

nNow…whatnabout the hermit crab?

n

n

n

n

n

n

n

Note the hermit crab’s
soft, unprotected abdomen,
which is curled up behind
its head and legs.

nAnhermit crab lives in a hard shell and has hard, jointed legs andnantennae. Its soft abdomen is unprotected when it is not “wearing”nits shell.

In other words, as its name suggests, a hermit crab is a crustacean.

n

n

n

nInthink a lot of people get confused about hermit crabs because theynalmost always choose to “wear” (live in and carry around) thendiscarded shells of mollusks. (Once in a blue moon you’ll see a hermit crab living inside a chunk of wood or something like that.)
n
nSo, if you ever see a beautiful shellnfrom a sea snail (a mollusk) walking around on jointed legs – youncan be sure that the creature inside is a hermit crab, not the mollusk that created the shell.

n

n

n

n

n

n

n

Normally, you will see a hermit crab inside
a mollusk’s abandoned shell.

n

n

nInam wondering if every single person in Ocean City, New Jersey, thinksnthat hermit crabs are mollusks? Surely not. I think maybe Martinnstole the last name “Mollusk” when he stole the mollusk shell henlives in!

n

n

n

nOnenof the best things ever!

n

n

n

nDidnyou know that there are times when a large mollusk shell becomesnavailable, and what is called a “vacancy chain” of hermit crabsnforms. This is a line of crabs from largest to smallest. As the firstnhermit crab in line leaves its shell to take possession of the largennew shell, the next hermit crab in line gives up its shell to moveninto the shell the first hermit crab just abandoned. Then the next one innline drops its shell and moves into the larger shell of the second, and so on allnthe way down the line.

n

n

n

nIsn’tnthat cool? I wonder how long this process takes?
