July 7 – Happy Birthday, Michele Kwan

nPostednon July 7, 2014

n

nShenreally, really wanted an Olympic gold medal.

n

n

n

nButnsometimes you can want something really badly, you can work reallynhard for it, you can even become “the best,” and you stillnmight not reach a particular goal.

n

n

n

nHownyou handle that disappointment makes all the difference. If you arenvery proud of all you did achieve, and if you are gracious innthe face of your disappointment, and if you move on to othernwonderful things – then you gain more respect and happiness thannmany people who actually achieve their most high-flying dream.

n

n

n

nMichelenKwan never got the Olympic gold medal in Women’s Figure Skating, butnshe did earn a silver and a bronze. She also earned NINE U.S.nchampionships and an amazing FIVE World championships. n

n

n

n

nShe is the most decorated figure skater in U.S. history!

n

n

n

nAndnbecause of Kwan’s consistency and artistry for over a decade, she isnconsidered one of the greatest figure skaters of all time!

n

n

n

nShenwas also one of the most popular female athletes in the United Statesnthroughout her competitive career.

n

n

n

nShe landed tons of endorsementndeals and was the top-paid skater for a number of years.

n

n

n

nIt’snreally a minor footnote than she never won Olympic gold, don’t younthink?

n

n

n

nStatsnand facts…

n

n

n

nMichelenKwan was born and raised in Southern California (I was born and stillnlive in So Cal, myself). Her parents were immigrants from Hong Kong.

n

n

n

nKwannis only five feet two inches tall! And still, when she performed hernsignature spiral, her legs seemed to go on for days!

n

n

n

nKwannhas earned many awards aside from her skating medals, including thenBillie Jean Award for her contribution to women’s sports, being namednone of the 50 most beautiful people in the world by Peoplenmagazine, and an honorary doctorate’s degree from a college innVermont.

n

n

n

nSkatingnmagazine has a Reader’s Choice Figure Skater of the Year award. Thenskaters who have won this award have only one once, except for JohnnynWeir, who won it twice. And except for Michele Kwan, who won it SEVENntimes! In 2003, the organizers of the award joked that they werenrenaming it to the Michele Kwan Trophy, and they said that she was nonlonger eligible for the award.

n

n

n

nKwannhas acted as public diplomacy ambassador under Presidents George W.nBush and under Barack Obama; she has traveled to many places in thenworld representing American values. She is now a State Departmentnsenior adviser for public diplomacy and public affairs.
