November 2: Happy Birthday, Cheerleading!

nPostednon November 2, 2014

n

n

n

nThenyear was 1898.

n

nThenplace was the United States of America.

n

nThenevent: the birth of cheerleading.

n
n

n

n

nInnever knew that cheerleading got started so late, nor that it was annAmerican innovation and remains largely an American thing.

n

n

n

nI alsondidn’t know that it started out as an all-male thing!

n

n

n

nCheerleadingndidn’t just start as an all-male sport, but it wasn’t even much of ansport!

n

n

n

nThe early cheerleaders were sometimes called “yellnleaders”—a good name, since leading the crowd in cheers is allnthat they did!

n

n

n

nThenvery first cheerleader was Johnny Campbell, who led students at thenUniversity of Minnesota in cheering, “Rah,nRah, Rah! Ski-u-mah, Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah! Varsity! Varsity! Varsity,nMinn-e-So-Tah!” University of Minnesota students still use thisncheer, all these years later!

n

n

n

nWomenncheerleaders started to appear in the early 1920s (although thenpostcard to the right shows a female cheerleader from way earlier!).nIn World War II, women started to dominate cheerleading, when few mennwere involved in organized sports. Today about 97% of allncheerleaders are female!

n

n

n

n

n

n

n

nGymnastics, ntumbling, and megaphones were added to the sport, and in the 1960s,nthe pompom was invented and began to be widely used. Soon dance movesnbegan to appear in cheer sequences. By the late 1970s, televisedncheer competitions raised the reputation of cheerleading as a sportnof its own.

n

n

n

n

n

nDidnyou know that cheerleading is the most dangerous of all sports? It’snmore dangerous, even, than football—because the injuries often comenfrom falling from high up.

n

n

n

n

Cheerleading started out with college students and
trickled down to high school students and younger.

n

nChecknout this, nthis other, nand this third videonfor some samples of what cheer is about today. There is a lot ofntumbling and “flying,” and I think you will see why it is sondangerous, but there is also dance and musicality.
