nWhethernyou listen to the World Radio Day broadcast, create your own radionshow, or hold a radio party, there are several interesting things tonconsider on this website…like the intersection of “radio” andn“internet.”

n

n

n

nAs we have seen with TV and movies, radio is becomingnmore and more of a “streaming” thing in addition to a “broadcast”nthing.

n

n

n

nWe can enjoy niche stations that only interest a smallnminority of people.

n

n

n

nWe can create our own content and upload it tonSoundcloud. n

nHowndoes radio work?

n

n
n

n

nItnwould seem to make sense that radio waves would be a kind of soundnwave, but no. Actually, radio waves are more like visiblenlight!

Visible light and radio waves, along with things likeninfrared, ultraviolet, microwaves, and X-rays, are all forms ofnelectromagnetic radiation. They all travel through a vacuumn(essentially empty space, without air) at what we call the speed ofnlight. Radio waves are much, much bigger than light waves (in termsnof their wavelength).

n

n
n

n

nSoundnwaves, on the other hand, are a vibration of something – often, anvibration of air or water molecules, or a vibration of a piece ofnmetal or diaphragm. Sound waves cannot travel in a vacuum. And theyntravel much slower than light and radio waves…which is why you seenfar-away lightning before you hear its thunder.

n

n

nOf course, our radios are designed to snatch radio waves and turn them into sound!

n

n

n

nItnisn’t just AM/FM radios and ham radios that use radio waves; cordlessnphones, garage door openers, cell phones, TV remotes,nremote-controlled toys, GPS devices, satellite transmissions, WiFi,nand airplane controls all use radio waves.
