nTodaynMorocco celebrates the birthday of its king!

n

n
n

n

nBornnon this date in 1963, Mohammed VI became king when his father died, non July 23, 1999. The nation of Morocco is a constitutional monarchynwith an elected parliament, but the king has a lot of power, nespecially as regards to the military, foreign policy, and religiousnmatters.

n

n
n

n

nMohammednVI was raised and educated to be king, starting a special school atnthe Royal Palace at age 4. He speaks Arabic, English, Spanish, andnFrench, and he has earned a PhD in law – with distinction – fromna French university. n

n

n
n

n

nHenhad a lot of opportunities and comforts because he was the CrownnPrince and is now the King, but please note also that Mohammed VI hasnnever had the freedom to choose what to study or work at, no freedomnto choose what and who to be…

nThisnnation is in northern Africa. It has rugged mountains and desert, butnit also has coastlines on both the Atlantic Ocean and thenMediterranean Sea! Because it is so close to Spain (by water) andnseparated from some of its African nations by all those mountains andndeserts, Morocco is pretty unique in its culture – it is very muchna diverse culture that is a blend of Arab, Berber (the nativenpeople), Sub-Saharan African, and European. It has two officialnlanguages – Arab and Berber and one “recognized nationalnlanguage” – French – as well as some local dialects. n

n

n

n

nHere are some photos that show some of the cultural diversity found in Morocco:
