nWhatndo you call a sandwich make with a long roll of bread? A submarine sandwich? A sub? A hero sandwich? A grinder? A hoagie? n

n

n
n

n

nSomenpeople call these sorts of sandwiches wedges, spuckies, po’boys, ngaribaldis, blimpies, zeppelins, bombers, Dagwoods, or baguettes (thenlong bread roll is also called a baguette, of course).

n

n
n

n

nWhatevernyou call them, they are popular and varied – with all sorts ofnmeats, cheeses, veggies, and toppings filling long rolls of manyndifferent sorts of bread.

I wonder if the widespread popularity of the term “sub”
is because of the fast food franchise Subway?

I apologize for this map being so fuzzy and hard to read.
It was hard for me to read, as well. But I thought it was
interesting enough to include despite the difficulty.

n

nTodaynwe look at the term hoagie. This is Philadelphia’s home-grownnterm for a large sandwich made with Italian bread. Nobody is quitensure where the name came from. Some speculate that hoagies wasna variation of hoggies – the nickname given to dockworkersnat the Navy Yard, which was located on what was then called HognIsland. However, the Hog Island Navy Yard shut down in the 1920s, andnhoagies became popular a couple of decades after that, so othersnspeculate that a jazz musician who who became a sandwich shop ownernnamed the long sandwiches hoggies as a joke: you had to be anhog to eat such a big sandwich.

n

n
n

n

nEithernway, you’ll notice that hoggies mysteriously became hoagiesn– quite possibly because people in other cities, when dealing withnwriting down what they had only heard said in a Philly accent, nbefore, ended up changing the spelling.

n

nIndon’t need to say a single word about how to celebrate Eat a HoagienDay, do I?

n

n
n

n

nButnI will link to a website that says it will tell us “How to make a classic Italian hoagie – the right way.”
