nIncouldn’t find a single detail about why Côtend’Ivoire (“Ivory Coast”)ncelebrates a “National Peace Day,” so I’m a bit skeptical that itnreally does. However, I love promoting peace, and I love learningnabout the many and varied nations of the world. So I thought, why notnjust admit that it may or may not be “National Peace Day” in Côtend’Ivoire – butnstill take advantage of the fact that the internet votes “yay,”nand use it as an excuse to talk about this fascinating WesternnAfrican nation.

n

nSeveralnkingdoms and empires existed in the area before European powersncolonized it; in the mid-1800s, Côtend’Ivoire became anprotectorate of France and later a full-fledged French colony. Afternit achieved independence in 1960, Côtend’Ivoire was rulednby one man for several decades; but it recently experienced a coupnd’état and two civilnwars.

  • n Côten d’Ivoire has two official capitals, Yamoussoukro and Abidjan. Then former is both the administrative and the political capital, and then latter is the economic capital.

  • nCôten d’Ivoire has an admirable amount of religious diversity, with closen to a third of the population being Muslim, a third being Christiann (mostly Catholic), and a third following Animism / native Africann religions. It is home to one of the largest Catholic basilicas inn the entire world.

Some articles claim that it is THE largestn basilica, and even THE largest church building, in the world.n However, according to Wikipedia,n it’s #8 for basilicas and #17 for all church buildings.
