December 18 – Steven Spielberg

nPostednon December 18, 2015

n

n

nAtnage 12, a Boy Scout wanted to earn the photography merit badge. Butnhis dad’s camera was broken! What’s a kid to do?

n

n

n

nYoungnSteven Spielberg (born on this date in 1946) realized that, althoughnhis dad’s still camera was broken, his dad also had a moviencamera.

Spielberg asked the Scoutmaster if he could make a movie innorder to earn the badge, and he was given permission to do so.

n

n

n

nSonpre-teen Spielberg made an 8mm Western called The Last Gunfight.nHe earned his badge and went on to making other amateur movies whennhe was 13 and 14 and…

n

n

n

nSpielbergnwas born in Ohio, had lived in New Jersey and Arizona, and eventuallynCalifornia. As soon as he graduated from high school, Spielberg movednto Los Angeles. He wanted to become a movie director, and he appliednto USC’s film school (one of the most prestigious in the world). Butnhe was turned down for his mediocre grades at high school. So he wentnto Cal State Long Beach instead.

n

n

n

nButnSpielberg also took a small, unpaid intern job at Universal Studios.nAnd he took every opportunity to keep making films. One of his filmsnwas seen by Universal Studios vice president Sidney Sheinberg – andnSheinberg was impressed! n

n

n

n

nSheinbergndid a very rare thing: he offered Spielberg a seven-year directingncontract. Suddenly, Spielberg became the youngest director EVER to bensigned for a long-term deal with a major Hollywood studio.

n

n

n

nSpielbergndropped out of college and started to work professionally fornUniversal.

n

n

n

nWasnthe Universal Studio executive’s hunch right to sign Spielberg? WasnSpielberg right to drop out of college?

n

n

n

n

n

n

n

nTonsum up, Steven Spielberg is one of the most popular and influentialndirectors and producers in movie history! He is one of thenco-founders of DreamWorks Studios, he has won Academy Awards for BestnDirector and Best Picture, and he is a billionaire!!

n

n

n

n

n

n

n

nHerenare a few things I found interesting about Spielberg’s story:

n

n

n

    n

  • nSpielbergn always loved the movies, and he particularly loved James Bondn movies. He asked Bond producer Albert R. Broccoli if he could directn a Bond film, and he was turned down because he didn’t have enoughn experience. So Spielberg got more experience and then asked again ifn he could direct a Bond film.

At that point, Spielberg’s filmsn were super popular and making money like crazy. So Broccoli againn turned Spielberg down, this time saying he couldn’t afford him.

    n

  • n

n

n

n

    n

  • nSpielbergn is really generous. He has a cool collection of movie items, but hen has purchased several Oscar statues that he then donated to then Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in an effort to preserven film history. Also, he donated any earnings he made from hisn Oscar-winning, highly-acclaimed film Schindler’s List – includingn any future profits from the film – to the Shoah Foundation, ann organization dedicated to preserving and promoting visual historyn and education, including filmed interviews with survivors andn witnesses of the Holocaust and other genocides.

    n

  • n

n

n

n

    n

  • nSpielbergn loves video games and has had a big role in creating severaln including the Medaln of Honorn franchise.

    n

  • n

n

n

n

n

n

    n

  • nSpielbergn has made some pretty sweet, even heart-warming movies about aliens,n which I really appreciate – because so many movies featuring aliensn before Spielberg came along were all about the horror and violencen of such contacts! But Spielberg has also created a lot of super sadn movies, horror movies, scary movies!

I didn’t realize thatn Spielberg cared enough about his young viewers that he helped ton create the PG-13 rating to tip people off if a movie might be toon upsetting for younger kids.

    n

  • n

  • nLiken me, Spielberg hates coffee and never drinks the vile stuff! We are an rarity among adults in America, though!

    n

  • n

n

n

n

    n

  • nEvenn though Spielberg dropped out of college in order to start his dreamn profession, he did end up slowly finishing his degree through ann independent projects program. In 2002, he was awarded a B.A. in filmn production.

Of course, he has also received an honoraryn degree from Brown University and from Boston University. n

    n

  • n

n

n

n

n

n

    n

  • nSpielbergn apparently suffered from dyslexia, which is a general term forn disorders that involve difficulty in learning to read. That may ben one reason he is such a proponent of visual education. Many, manyn people learn more easily through audio-visual materials such asn movies and video games than they do through reading.
