nTherenisn’t one simple story about how gumdrops were invented, althoughneveryone seems to agree that they were invented in the U.S. A lot ofnpeople float around the “fact” that they were invented in 1801,nbut there are no details to check – no who, where, etc. The firstnmentions in print of “gum drops” seem to be in Illinois, in 1859,nand Washington, in 1860. Certainly by the end of the 1800s, gumdropsnwere popular.
