March 5 – National Cheese Doodle Day

n
nTodaynwe celebrate a “food” that is bright and colorful and yummy – an“food” that comes in fun puffy or crunchy shapes.
n

n
n

n

nInput the word food in quotation marks to show that cheesendoodles, while of course are edible, should not be considered annessential part of a nutritious diet! n

n

n
n

n

nAnynfood that stains your fingers THAT orange should probably be viewednwith a bit of skepticism, don’t you think?

n

n

n

n

n

nPerhapsninvented by Morrie Yohai in the 1940s (other accounts have the snacknbeing invented elsewhere, earlier), cheese doodles are made ofncornmeal. They are puffed up with air, then baked; then they arencoated with cheddar cheese.

n

n
n

n

nYohai’sninvention was named Cheez Doodles, which are referred to as “cheesensnacks.” Other cheese doodle products are referred to as cheese balls, cheesenpuffs, cheese curls, cheesy puffs, corn curls, and corn cheese.

nMynpersonal favorite form of cheese doodles are Cheetos (originalnflavor). They were invented in 1948 by the same fellow who inventednFritos corn chips.

As unlikely as it sounds, I read that there are
Pepsi-flavored Cheetos.

WHY???

n

nButnCheetos are not just available in that original flavor. The mainnflavor I see other people eating here in Southern California is thenred, spicy Flamin’ Hot Cheetos. But elsewhere in the world people eatnCheetos with other flavors. Japanese people get to eat StrawberrynCheetos (the original version dipped in flavored icing – what???).nPeople in Australia eat Cheetos Cheese and Bacon Balls. People innIndia have healthier versions made with whole grains and vegetables.

n

n
n

n

nBeforenstarting to manufacture and sell Cheetos in China, Frito-Lay testednall sorts of Cheetos flavoring, from ranch dressing to North Seancrab, from caramel to smoked octopus. The top two flavor that wentninto production are Savory American Cream Cheetos and Zesty JapanesenSteak Cheetos. n

n

n
n

n

nSomenCheetos are produced in different colors, too. Because what could benbetter than having green-stained fingers from eating a cheesy snack?

n

n
n

n

n

n

n

n

nCheetosnaren’t just my favorite – they are top selling brand of cheesendoodles in the U.S., with 21 different types in North America alone.nThey are sold in more than 36 countries, to the tune of $4 BILLIONndollars worldwide!
