nFirst of all, Mario’s creatorn(Shigeru Miyamoto, working for Nintendo) wanted his video game tonfeature Popeye the Sailor Man – but he was unable to get a licensento do so. So he created Mario, calling him Mr. Video (at first unablento jump) and later Jumpman (as you can imagine, now able to jump!).nThis character first appeared in Donkey Kong in 1981. n

nSincenDonkey Kong was located on a construction site, Jumpman was ancarpenter. In Donkey Kong Junior, the carpenter was renamednMario. However, in his next appearance in a video game, much of whichnwas located underground, Miyamoto made Mario a plumber. And not justnany old plumber – a mustachioed Italian American New Yorkernplumber!
