nIt’snsurely really tough to be the something-est person in the world. Younknow, the tallest, shortest, heaviest…It’s much easier to be annaverage-sized person – because, for one thing, furniture and carsnand amusement park rides and ready-wear clothing all fit you!
n
n
n
nButnJyoti Amge doesn’t have that choice, so she might just as wellnembrace her specialness and fame, right?
n
n
n
n
n
n
nJyotinAmge turned 18 years old on this date in 2011, and she was officiallyndeclared the world’s smallest woman, with an entry in the GuinnessnWorld Records. Amge is just 2 feet, 6 inches, tall – just 62.8ncentimeters! The reason for her short stature is a kind of dwarfismncalled achondroplasia.
n
n
n
nAmge, nwho lives in India, has been featured in a documentary, several TVnshows, and in a wax statue at a Celebrity Wax Museum in India. n
n
n
n
nOfncourse, one of the marvelous things about something-est people beingnfamous is that they can share with the rest of us importantnmessages:
n
n
n
n“I don’t like it if I am being held like a baby.nIf someone holds me normally, and I’m not being coddled, I feel muchnmore comfortable.”
n
n
n
n“[Inget mad when] someone annoys me by touching my hair or keeps touchingnme without permission.”
n
n
n
n“[We]ncan do the things that normal people can.”
n
n
n
n“Thenworst part about being so small is that I always have to rely onnsomeone. I can’t go anywhere on my own, so I’m always dependent. Incan’t run or walk too fast. If I was taller for a day, I’d just gonoff on my own independently.”
n
n
n
n“Inam proud of being small.”
n
n
n
n“Infeel grateful to be this size; after all, if I weren’t small and hadnnot achieved these world records, I might never have been able tonvisit Japan and Europe and many other wonderful countries.”
n
n
n
nSo,ntwo basic things:
n
n
n
n(1) Jyoti wants to be treated normally. She may notnbe normal in size, but she is normal in needs and desires –nincluding wanting to be in control of her own body, wanting to bentaken seriously, wanting to be treated as an adult.
n
n
n
n(2) Don’t pitynher. She has challenges, and we can certainly empathize with them, nbut she also has benefits, and she is grateful for those benefits.
