n
n
n
nImmunology – the study of how we resist infections or toxins.
n
n
n
nPretty important, right?
n
n
n
n
n
n
nBacteriology – the study of bacteria – which are responsible for many illnesses AND (different bacteria!) for many healthy processes.
n
n
n
nAlso hugely important!
n
n
n
nBorn on this date in 1903, Ruth Ella Moore was a bacteriologist who published works on a terrible disease called tuberculosis, on dental cavities, on the effects that antibiotics have on the microorganisms we count on in our digestive systems, and on blood types of African Americans.
n
n
n
n
nShe was a professor, and the head of the Department of Bacteriology at Howard University.
n
n
n
nAnd before she achieved all of that, she became at age 30 the first African American woman to earn a PhD in the natural sciences.
n
n
n
nWaaaaay cool.
