nThere is Universal Children’s Day, declared by the United Nations, in November. But many nations celebrate Children’s Day on other days of the year. In Bangladesh, the holiday is held on the birthday of the “Father of the Nation,” or Bangabandhu, “Friend of Bengal,” a man called Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Sheikh Mujib was born on this date in 1920. He was known as a popular orator (speaker) who stood for democracy and socialism, and who was important in the movement for “East Pakistan” becoming an independent self-governing nation. He served the new nation as Prime Minister and as President. Despite the fact that Mujib and almost his entire family were assassinated in 1975, two of his daughters were away during the coup, and one of them (Sheikh Hasina) is the current Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
