November 11 – A Day Dedicated to Memorials

nToday is Veterans’ Day, Armistice Day, Remembrance Day: the anniversary of the peace treaty that finally ended World War I.

n

nSince it was a WORLD war, this date is celebrated in many different nations around the world, including my own nation (the U.S.). 

n

nIt’s a natural fit to also dedicate war / peace memorials on this important anniversary. Here’s a few nations that chose to do just that:

n1921 – U.S. President Warren G. Harding dedicates the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery.

n

n

n1934 – In Australia, the Shrine of Remembrance is opened in Melbourne.

n

n

n1993 – In the U.S., a sculpture honoring the women who served in the Vietnam War is dedicated in Washington, D.C.

n

n

n2004 – In New Zealand, the Tomb of the Unknown Warrior is dedicated at the National War Memorial in Wellington.

n

n

n2006 – In the U.K., Queen Elizabeth unveils the New Zealand War Memorial in London.
