nToday is the feast day of St. Ambrose; Aurelius Ambrosius lived in the mid-to-late 300s C.E. and was a lawyer, a governor of the city of Milan, and eventually Milan’s bishop. He is now considered the patron saint of the city, which is now in northern Italy.

nAs you would expect with a holiday and feast day, many places of business are closed, and there is a special church service. The highlight of the day may be the Oh Bej! Oh Bej! street market, with crowds of people eating and drinking Milan’s specialties and a bunch of stalls displaying arts and crafts for sale, just in time for Christmas shopping.

Milan is the center of the largest metropolitan area in Italy (although the city of Milan itself is not quite as large as Italy’s capital, Rome). Milan is considered a global city – one of the places in the world where art, commerce, design, education, entertainment, fashion, finance, healthcare, media, services, research, and tourism flourish; a place of influence; a place where headquarters of businesses and banks are located. It has the third largest economy among E.U. cities (London and Paris are larger) – and of course it follows that Milan has the very largest economy among E.U. cities that aren’t capitals!
