In the 19th century, a woman named Elizabeth endured an extraordinary and harrowing experience that earned her the haunting nickname, the ‘Cripplegate Ghost.’ Married to a well-to-do man, Elizabeth met an untimely demise, swiftly laid to rest in the church of St. Giles Cripplegate, wearing her wedding dress and valuable wedding ring.
News of the valuable ring reached the ears of a cunning thief, who, in collaboration with the church warden, attempted to pilfer the precious possession.
Little did they know that Elizabeth was not as lifeless as they assumed. As the thief struggled to remove the ring, resorting to cutting off her finger, Elizabeth startled them all by awakening in the coffin.
The unexpected sight of a seemingly resurrected woman caused the thief and the church warden to flee in terror, abandoning their lantern in the process.
Disoriented but alive, Elizabeth managed to stagger home, where she sought refuge at her front door. Unfortunately, her arrival terrified the household servant, who, mistaking her for a ghost, screamed and slammed the door shut.
Fortuitously, Elizabeth’s husband was at home and, upon realizing the truth, welcomed her inside. Despite the shocking events, Elizabeth made a full recovery, living for many years and adding four more children to her family.
Yet, the moniker ‘Cripplegate Ghost’ lingered, a testament to the extraordinary tale of her awakening from what was thought to be eternal slumber.
