Adam Wingard, who is a massive fan of the big monsters, has been tasked to direct Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros.’ Godzilla vs. Kong.
The studios, have recently come together to foster a new cinematic universe that has the likes of the King Kong and Godzilla inhabiting it. They first kicked-off this universe with the 2014 Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla reimagining and with this year’s Jordan Vogt-Roberts-directed Kong: Skull Island, the latter making huge numbers thanks to a $565 million box office win for the studios. Currently, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, sequel to the Godzilla feature, is in production with a cast that includes Kyle Chandler, Vera Farmiga and Millie Bobby Brown being directed by Michael Dougherty.
With Godzilla vs. Kong, which will see the two iconic big name monsters fight it out, Legendary set up a writers’ room, headlined by Pirates of the Caribbean franchise scribe Terry Rossio. The room included talent like Star Trek Beyond writers Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne, Lindsey Beer, Cat Vasko, T.S. Nowlin, who wrote the Maze Runner films, Transcendence scribe Jack Paglen and finally J. Michael Straczynski, who created Babylon 5.
For Wingard, this will be a huge step up from his earlier work, which includes The Guest and You’re Next, a reboot of Blair Witch and more recently a Netflix live-action adaption of the Death Note.
As of now plot details are being hidden. Godzilla vs. Kong is expected to release May 22, 2020.
