As the number of civilian fatalities since the weekend increased to 97, Sudan’s besieged capital awoke on Monday to a third day of fierce combat between the army and a strong opposing group for control of the country.

White smoke billowed from the area as airstrikes and shelling increased over some of Khartoum and the nearby city of Omdurman. There was also rapid-fire gunfire heard close to the military headquarters.

The number of combatants killed was not publicly known. The dead of numerous men wearing camouflage uniforms are seen lying on beds, the floor of a medical unit, and on a sandy area outside in footage that was shared online on Monday and depicts the RSF barracks in Omdurman.

The tapes’ veracity cannot be independently verified, but they emerged after the army claimed to have attacked the Rapid Support Forces’ bases with airstrikes.

According to the Medical Syndicate, a hospital in southern Khartoum was struck by an errant shell on Monday morning without anyone being hurt.

She continued, describing the action as chaotic and unprecedented, taking place in heavily populated areas of the capital with tanks, truck-mounted machine guns, artillery, and bombers.

At the summit of the Group of Seven wealthy nations in Japan, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken reiterated his appeal for a ceasefire and a restart of talks.
